Imagine yourself inside a wine shop. You are surrounded by endless choices of bottles. They all look the same.
You know that Italian wines are considered to be some of the best in the world so you walk over to the Italian wine section. Again, there’s an entire wall of Italian wine bottles all staring at you and the only familiar words you see are Chianti and Pinot Grigio.
How do you buy Italian wine when there are so many options?
I’ll give you 3 quick tips to start. Many more tips can be found in Hidden Gems of Italy.
Quality Italian wines are tough to find below $15. This is the minimum you should consider spending if you want to experience the potential of Italian wine. I’d say that between $17 - $25 you can find some incredible Italian wines if you know what to look for.
If you want to learn how to buy Italian wines, you’ve got to memorize the 20 regions of Italy. Not today but take a look at a regional map of Italy and get familiar. In the meantime, narrow your Italian wine search down to 3 regions: Abruzzo, Sicily, and Puglia.
In the price range we set from #1, you can find some amazing Italian wines from these regions. In Italy, regions are like States in America. Each region has its own local wines. When you go to a wine shop, look for signs for these Italian regions. If the store doesn’t have signs, ask the manager to show you wines from those regions.

1. Avoid buying wines because you think the label is pretty Big wine companies know that people like to buy nice looking bottles. So they spend more money dressing the bottle up than they do actually making a quality Italian wine. Don’t fall for it.
2. Avoid Italian wines that have the words, “Coop. or Cooperative” on the back label. These are huge wineries that buy their grapes from dozens, sometimes hundreds of farmers. They end up mixing all these grapes in one place, and usually have to intervene with more chemicals to make the wine drinkable.
3. Avoid 90-point Italian wines. You’ll never learn how to buy Italian wine if you use 90 point scores for your decision making process. It becomes a crutch and you might end up passing over the greatest wine in your life simply because it doesn’t have a 90+ rating.
